2011 GOP Float for Albany's Veterans Day Parade

The Linn and Benton County Republicans came together again this year to honor our Veterans in Albany's Veterans Day Parade. BCRW played a large roll. The float décor was designed by PJ Hunter. Then, Stella Guenther, Linda & Bob Bartcher, Garland Hunter and PJ went to work to make a small scale graphic BIG, BIG, BIG!!! Over the past few weeks, Kim Rowe, Sandra Hickey, Linda Bartcher, and Stella Guenther made over 1,400 military tribute buttons to pass out to Veterans along the parade route in appreciation for their service to our great nation.

Thank you John & Myrna Bell, John Detweiler, Charles & Jean Nelson, Bob & Linda Bartcher, Rex Watkins, Stella Guenther and PJ Hunter for participating and representing Benton County.

The Benton County Republican Women assisted with the Benton County Republican Party's food booth at the Corvallis Fall Festival. BCRW Member, Linda Bartcher, chaired the event and she did a fantastic job! We'd like to thank Linda's husband, Bob, for all his help as well. The 2011 menu included Spaghetti with or without meatballs, Meatball Subs, Meatballs-on-a-Stick, Chocolate and Strawberry Sundaes and assorted beverages. The Corvallis Fall Festival ran September 24th and 25th in Central Park. Again, many thanks Linda and Bob and a hearty thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make this a very successful event.

The Preamble to the United States Constitution is a brief introductory statement of the Constitution's fundamental purposes and guiding principles. It states in general terms, and courts have referred to it as reliable evidence of, the Founding Fathers' intentions regarding the Constitution's meaning and what they hoped the Constitution would achieve.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The Constitution was “penned” by Jacob Shallus, A Pennsylvania General Assembly clerk, for $30 ($726 today).

The U.S. Constitution has 4,543 words. It is the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world."

The United States of America is a REPUBLIC!
In our 2010 display, there was some controversy over the answer to the question:
“Did the Constitution establish a democracy in America?”

The answer is “No.” The Founders’ reasoning was that a democracy leads to ‘mob rule’ and disregards the rights of the individual (minority).

When it came time for the states to ratify the Constitution, the lack of any bill of rights was the primary sticking point.

When the Constitution was signed, the United States’ population was 4 million. It is now more than 309 million. Philadelphia was the nation’s largest city, with 40,000 inhabitants.

The U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1789 with 9 of the 13 states voting for ratification.
Eventually all 13 states would ratify the U.S. Constitution.

Of what class of society were the members of the Constitutional Convention?
All classes. They were lawyers, soldiers, planters, educators, ministers, physicians, financiers, and merchants.

A Bill of Rights exists in the U.S. Constitution in order to protect certain individual rights: the freedoms of speech and religion, the right to bear arms, etc.

The individual rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights cannot be voted away by the majority of citizens if they wished to oppress a minority who does not agree with the restrictions on liberty that they wish to impose. To eliminate these rights would require government officials overcoming constitutional checks as well as a two-thirds majority vote of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the States in order to amend the Constitution.

Be sure to drop by the Oregon Republican Party's booth when you visit the Oregon State Fair between August 26th and September 5th (Labor Day). The booth was decorated by Stella Guenther with assistance from Kim Rowe, Bob and Linda Bartcher, some of PJ's handiwork, Janice Williamson of Salem, Chris Rusk and Ray Jones of Albany and volunteers from the Oregon Republican Party. The emphasis in the booth is Republican voter registration via "The Power of 1 Pledge." Judging from the pictures that Kevin Hoar, ORP Field Director, so graciously sent us, there appears to be a secondary focus on FUTURE Republican voters. We wish the Oregon Republican Party volunteers much success with their registration efforts.

July 7-10: The Philomath Frolic & Parade is always such a fun and friendly event! The Benton County Republicans participated with a voter registration booth from which they sold Root Beer floats and soda pop and buttons. They also participated in the Saturday, July 9th parade in which their "Liberty" float was awarded the Grand Parade first place ribbon. Benton County Republican Women helped design and decorate the float and volunteered some hours to man the booth.

On Saturday, May 21st, patriotic citizens gathered on the National Guard Armory grounds in Corvallis, Oregon for a flag rally to honor the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. This was a non-partisan event. The Benton County Republican Women provided refreshments.

The Linn and Benton County Republicans and the Benton County Republican Women held their annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Saturday, February 12th at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center in Corvallis, Oregon. In conjunction with the dinner and auction, President Abraham Lincoln (Steve Holgate) held a press conference and spoke to the gathered press (our guests). Once the president started speaking, one could have heard a pin drop in the room.

What American wouldn't love to have a conversation with our first Republican President? Imagine hearing him talk and being provided an opportunity to ask about those times and the momentous decisions he made. This year’s keynote speaker at the Linn and Benton Republicans Lincoln Day Dinner is President Abraham Lincoln. Our speaker is an actor from Portland who strongly resembles Lincoln and gives audiences all over Oregon a chance to hear Lincoln (in period costume) talk about his years in the White House. Pinkerton guards will be in attendance for the President's security.

The evening’s events include buffet dinner catered by the popular El Sol de Mexico in Corvallis plus live and silent auctions. A sampling of our auction items is a BBQ dinner for 40 to 45 people in June 2011, gun training classes, blown glass item(s) by an Oregon artisan, and beautifully created theme baskets with hotel, resort and restaurant certificates.

On Thursday, December 13th, the Benton County Republican Women met for their annual Christmas Party to celebrate all the hours of hard work that members and volunteers put in throughout this election year. We enjoyed Christmas music by Dan Vickers, Pastor of Cowboy Church, and friends. We had a lovely potluck luncheon, heard words of appreciation and Charlotte Vickers presented library books to the librarian of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. Colleen Ghasedi talked about her mission to Uganda and about the LifeSeeds organization. As part of our Republican Women in Business (RWIB) program, Wendy McCormick was featured and spoke about her Live Wise Now business. Trisha Graham displayed her World Ventures wholesale travel materials and spoke briefly. Our special guest speakers were Joyce Waggoner, President of Oregon Federation of Republican Women and Eleanor Boese, OFRW District IV Director. Members brought canned goods or contributions to LifeSeeds to help provide food for local families and clothing for Altrusa's Career Closet, which provides business or work clothing for women in need.

On Friday, September 17th, patriots gathered at 4th St. and Harrison Blvd. in Corvallis to celebrate the U.S. Constitution and protest the governments' failure to honor the principles of the Constitution. Participants took turns at the microphone reading through the constitution as part of "We Read the Constitution," a growing national event. The group handed out The Constitution of the United States booklets to those who wanted a copy of this incredible blueprint for the freest most prosperous nation on earth. The event was sponsored by the Benton County Chapter of Americans for Prosperity (AFP), Linda Weimer, Chair. Non-partisan event.

The Benton County Veterans Memorial Committee and the community of Benton County sponsored a candlelight remembrance and memorial program honoring the fallen and the families of those who lost their lives in the 9-11 tragedy. The September 11, 2010 program started at 7:00 PM with Les Whittle as Emcee. Candle GLOW STICKS were furnished for a lovely candlelight effect. Local police and fire fighters remembered their fellow first responders, many of whom sacrificed their lives or health to save others on September 11, 2001 and beyond during the long recovery process at ground zero. The program was held in front of the Benton County Veterans Memorial at 1100 NW Kings Blvd. in Corvallis, Oregon.

On Thursday, August 19th, the Benton County Republicans held their annual Republican Barbecue at Les Wheeler's beautiful farm on Kiger Island in Corvallis, Oregon. With a talented crew of volunteers, Sandy McHenry barbecued his fabulous Tri-tip beef and chicken dinner with Cowboy beans and the meal was rounded out with green salad, warm garlic bread and cake or watermelon for dessert. Approximately 250 guests attended the event. In this extremely important election year we were thrilled that nearly all of our Republican candidates were able to attend and speak briefly. They were, Chris Dudley for Governor, Jim Huffman for U.S. Senate, Art Robinson for the Fourth Congressional District, Scott Bruun for the Fifth Congressional District, Chris Telfer for State Treasurer, Sen. Frank Morse for State Senate, Rep. Andy Olson for State Representative of District 15, Rose Cook for State Representative of District 16, Rep. Jim Thompson for State Representative of District 23, Jerry Jackson for Benton County Commissioner, Mark O'Brien for Corvallis City Council Ward 1 and John Detweiler for Corvallis City Council Ward 6. Rick Schroff for Corvallis City Council Ward 7 was unable to attend. Our appreciation to our host, our guests, candidates and volunteers who made this event a great success.

The Benton County Fair was held August 4-7. The Benton GOP had a booth for local party information and a candidates' booth, in which our Republican candidates were able to visit with fair goers, pass out literature, lawn signs and sign up volunteers. Once again, the Worlds Smallest Political Quiz was a hit. On Thursday, August 5th, the Benton County Republican Women manned the booth.

On July 26th, the Benton County Republican Women held their annual Summer Potluck Picnic and Membership Drive at the beautiful home of Janet Paine. April Aguirre and Caroline Vogt, Republican Women in Business, spoke during lunch. Our Guest speakers were Colleen Ghasedi, Cindy Crook and Ineke Loux representing Friends of the Family Ministry, a counseling center for preparing, strengthening and restoring marriage and family relationships.

The Benton County Republican's participated in the Red White & Blue Riverfront Festival's All American Everyone-Can-Join Fabulous Fantastic 4th of July Parade in Corvallis. Participants gathered at 11:30 am on 8th St. between Monroe and Jefferson and the parade started around 12 noon with walkers 1st, animals 2nd and vehicles last. The float was decorated with campaign signs of our "All American, Fabulous Fantastic Republican Candidates for 2010." Aboard the Republican float was Rose Cook, candidate for State Representative, District 16; Jerry Jackson, candidate for County Commissioner; Alma and PJ with visiting family, Matt, Ty, Karen and Ethan. Tom Cook pulled the float and it was a wonderful ride as parade goers greeted us most kindly with waves and some very enthusiastic thumbs up! The parade ended around 12:30 p.m.

On Saturday, July 3rd, the Benton County Republicans held their annual Independence Day Breakfast. The menu included pancakes and French toast with a choice of Marion berry, blueberry and strawberry compotes or butter and syrup, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browned potatoes, coffee, tea, fresh spring water and chilled orange juice. Wayne Goehring, singer/guitarist, added ambiance as his patriotic music wafted through the warming morning air. Door prize numbers were called throughout the event. Republican candidates, Art Robinson for U.S. Congress, Frank Morse for State Senate, Andy Olson and Rose Cook for State Representative and Jerry Jackson for County Commissioner, donned aprons, took a turn in the serving line, gave brief speeches and chatted easily with guests. It was a beautiful morning to celebrate our independence and recognize those who pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to achieve it. May we make the right choices to preserve it. God bless America!

On June 17th, the OFRW District IV Luncheon Meeting was held at the Yaquina Bay Restaurant in Albany, Oregon. Eleanor Boese, District IV Director led the meeting of Republican Women clubs from Benton, Linn, Capitol City (Marion) and Polk and Lane Counties. The theme was "Celebrating our 75th Anniversary, Women Empowering Women." The guest speaker was Paulette Pyle, Grass Roots Director for Oregonians for Food and Shelter. There were two training sessions: Fund Raising and The Best Way I Can Help the Candidate.

On Tuesday, May 18th, friends gathered to watch the Primary Election results on the big screen at Ruby Tuesday's on 9th Street in Corvallis, Oregon. Candidates Jerry Jackson, running for Benton County Commissioner, and Rose Cook, running for State Representative in District 16, attended the celebration. The party was organized by the Benton County AFP.

On Thursday, April 15th, Benton County taxpayers showed their disapproval of the government’s unsustainable spending policies and the passage of Obamacare with its massive new entitlements and taxes that the majority of Americans vehemently opposed. President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, Senate Leader Reid and the progressive Congressional Democrats are hell-bent on redistributing the nation's wealth and transforming America into a European-style Social Democracy. Tea partiers are demanding a return to fiscal responsibility and the conservative principles the Founders established in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The Tea Party was organized by Linda Weimer, Chairman of the Benton County Chapter of Americans for Prosperity.

The Benton and Linn County Republicans participated jointly in the November 11th “Generations of Valor” Veterans Day Parade in Albany, Oregon. The Benton County Republican Women made thousands of patriotic buttons for parade goers with new designs from April Aguirre of Warrior’s Refuge Military Card Company. Rep. Andy Olson, Christy Sullivan, Linda Bartcher and Stella Guenther passed the buttons out along the parade route. Sen. Frank Morse and John Bussell, race car driver representing Operation Homefront, walked with the float and Sid Leiken and his campaign group followed while Bob Bartcher expertly pulled the float. Riding the float were Linn County Republican Chair, Jo Rae Perkins with her son and lovely granddaughter, Mary Grimes of the Linn County Republican Women and John Bussell’s beautiful wife and family, (unidentified) with her darling infant daughter (our youngest rider yet), Ed Cohn, John Detweiler and PJ Hunter of Benton County. We wish to thank the Veterans Commemorative Association for putting on a fantastic parade and offer our gratitude to the City of Albany for hosting it. And finally, with our deepest appreciation, we thank our veterans who have served our country and protected our freedoms so well. God bless you all.

The 2009 Benton County Republican Barbecue was held on August 20th in the Beer Gardens at the Philomath Frolic Rodeo Grounds in Philomath, Oregon. Linn County Republicans joined us for the evening. A social gathering began at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. Sandy McHenry and his volunteer crew fired up the barbecue and bean pot early in the day for a fabulous Tri-tip beef and chicken dinner. Lynda McHenry filled out the menu with her crew of Republican volunteers. Bob Tiernan, Chairman of the Oregon Republican Party was the main speaker. Also speaking were candidates Sid Leiken and Jaynee Garmond, running for Congress (Dist. 4) and Jerry J. Jackson, Sr., running for Benton County Commissioner, Position 1. (More details coming). John Wilder chaired the event with PCP's and the BCRW assisting.

We offer our appreciation to our Republican volunteers for manning the booths and to our Republican legislators and candidates for their appearances in the booths. This year we conducted the World's Smallest Political Quiz which drew interest and some surprises.

The annual Summer Potluck Picnic and Membership Drive of the Benton County Republican Women was held at Janet Paine's beautiful home on Monday, July 27, 2009. Janet is such a fine hostess and makes everyone feel welcome and comfortable. The view is an incredible series of Christmas Trees of various growth stages spilling over rolling hills. First Vice President, Hawthorne O'Rourke stood in for President Lou Copes who was out of state. Christine Strawn, Vice President of the Oregon Chapter of Operation Homefront, was the guest speaker. Christine explained that the recent deployment of National Guard Troops to Iraq was the largest deployment in Oregon's history and so Operation Homefront is committed to assisting a huge number of families of the deployed and she explained the many ways in which BCRW members can help.

The Benton County Republicans participated in the Philomath Frolic Parade on Saturday, July 11, 2009. Sid Leiken, Mayor of Springfield and 2010 candidate for U.S. Congress for Oregon District 4 and Andy Olson, Incumbent Oregon State Representative for District 15 and 2010 candidate, walked the parade route passing out candy and balloons with the help of Mayor Leiken's campaign assistant, Jenn Thompson and Linda Bartcher. Bob Bartcher expertly pulled the float again this year. We were pleased that John Bussell, race car driver representing Operation Homefront, and his son Gary joined us for the parade as well as Laurie Rentz as the Statue of Liberty. Others riding the float were Lee McLaughlin and his daughter Hailee, John Detweiler, Stella Guenther, Sandra Hickey and PJ Hunter. Philomath parade goers are so enthusiastic and always make this event such a pleasure. Our thanks to all!

The 2009 Benton County Republicans' annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast was held in the parking lot at the NEW Republican Headquarters, 1760 SW 3rd St., in Corvallis, Oregon. It was a great way to start this Independence Day's celebrations. Wishing you all a wonderful 4th and thank you for having breakfast with us! The Oregon Chapter of Operation Homefront sponsored the 2009 Armed Forces Day Tribute and Flag Rally at 11:00 a.m. in front of the National Guard Armory, 1100 NW Kings Blvd. in Corvallis, Oregon. The rally was non-partisan and open to all who wished to participate in honoring the wonderful men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

On Tax Day, citizens gathered to make their concerns know and voices heard concerning government over-spending, corporate bailouts and mounting debt which is being placed on the shoulders of younger and future generations. Tea Parties were held across the nation as a grassroots movement of solidarity which easily crossed party lines.

This year the Benton County Republican Women helped with the 2009 celebration of President Abraham Lincoln's 200th Birthday and Oregon's 150th Anniversary of Statehood. A dinner and benefit auction was held on March 14th by the Linn and Benton County Republicans at Teen Challenge in Shedd, Oregon. U.S. Representative Greg Walden was the main speaker, State Representative Andy Olson served as Master of Ceremonies and Reece Hrizuk was the auctioneer. We thank our guests for joining us for this very special evening. Also, our thanks to all at Teen Challenge for their part in making this event a joy.

The Benton County Republicans had a great location for two booths this year to promote both the local party and our Republican candidates for the 2008 election. The Fair ran from July 29th through August 2nd. Friday was BCRW's day to man the booth, though we thank our PCP's, Volunteers and Republican Women for covering the booths throughout the Fair.

The Benton County Republicans cheered on Republican candidates and encouraged voters to vote "Republican" from their float entry in the Philomath Frolic Parade on July 12, 2008 in Philomath, Oregon. The Benton GOP played a supporting role for Representative Andy Olson, who walked the parade route passing out candy. Bob and Linda Bartcher were so kind to pull the float. Reece Hrizuk and Graham Hay walked with Rep. Olson. Riders were Birdie Reetz, John Detweiler, Shirley Douglas, Sandra Hickey, Dale Clark (President of Operation Homefront Oregon), PJ Hunter, Stella Guenther and her grandsons, Jace, Derrick and Ryan. Decorators were Stella Guenther, Sandra Hickey, Linda Bartcher and PJ Hunter.

The Benton County Republican Central Committee put on its annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast and Yard Sale for 2008 in the parking lot at Republican Headquarters. This popular event is a fundraiser for the Benton GOP and it is lots of fun and a great way to start Independence Day! Our thanks to Gene Klingler, who chaired the event, to all who helped Gene make this celebration a wonderful success, and a special thanks to all our guests.

Congratulations to Joan Wood, winner of the "Patriotic Quilt Drawing," offered by the BCRW as a fundraiser! The quilt was handcrafted under the direction of accomplished quiter, Dr. Juanita Lamley.

On Saturday, June 21, 2008 the Oregon Federation of Republican Women held their District IV Director's Meeting at the Eola Inn Restaurant which is nestled on the bank of the Willamette River at what is known as Eola Bend. Vi MacDonald, District IV Director, conducted the meeting with OFRW President, Joyce Waggoner present. Andrew Over, Executive Director of the Oregon Republican Party was the main speaker. Mason Harrison, Oregon Campaign Chair for Sen. John McCain, also spoke briefly saying that Oregon is "in play," and we will see a very active and committed McCain campaign. Friday, May 16, 2008 - The Oregon Federation of Republican Women held their "Day at the Capitol" with a number of County RW Clubs attending. Jeff Kropf, former Legislator, talk radio host and activist with Americans for Prosperity conducted a grassroots training session and presented information from AFP. During the luncheon Rep. Andy Olson, Rep. Bruce Hanna and Sen. Jackie Winters spoke and held a Q&A session. Mike Erickson, candidate for U.S. Congress, District 5, also spoke. A tour of the Capitol followed and then the group participated in an afternoon workshop. Rob Kremer, lobbyist for Charter Schools gave a talk on “How to Lobby and How to Testify” before legislative committees and; Kevin Mannix, experienced bill writer, presented “How to Write an Initiative.” After adjournment, pictures were taken on the Capitol steps.

TriWest Healthcare Alliance presented "Operation Christmas Hope", a benefit dinner & concert for the Oregon Chapter of Operation Homefront as they prepare to serve local families of deployed soldiers during the holiday season. The benefit was held on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 at the historic Venetian Theater, in downtown Albany. A fabulous dinner was catered by Novak's Hungarian Paprikas, and The Lost Dogs, an Alt Americana band based out of Southern California and Nashville, provided the evening's entertainment, which included original hits, Christmas songs, sing-a-longs and a comical radio show complete with 'really bad' English accents (according to the Lost Dogs)! If you missed this event... don't be too hard on yourself... we suspect you'll get another chance next year. We base our suspicion on the success of this event and the terrific time that was had by all. It was an evening to remember! The Benton County Republican women have supported Operation Homefront/Oregon since its establishment earlier this year.

The Linn & Benton County Republicans entered a float in Albany's Veterans Day Parade, Saturday, November 10, 2007 to honor our veterans. Dale Clark, Oregon Chapter president of Operation Homefront, pulled the float. The theme for Albany's 2007 Veterans Day Parade was "Veterans Give Us Freedom." With around 200 entries, and as many as 40,000 spectators, Albany hosts the largest Veterans Day parade west of the Mississippi. It was an honor for the Benton County Republican Women to assist with the event.

The Benton and Linn County Republicans joined with the OSU College Republicans to participate in the Oregon State University Homecoming Parade held October 27, 2007. Sponsored by the OSU Alumni Association, the parade started at 10:30 a.m. from 1st Street and Jefferson Avenue in Corvallis, proceeded to OSU and then wound through campus. The Benton County Republican Women took responsiblity for float design and led the joint decorating work parties. The parade theme was, "Home is where the Orange is!"

The Benton County Republican Women of Oregon were represented at the 34th Biennial Convention of the National Federation of Republican Women by Maureen Russian, 2006-2007 President, and Stella Gunther, Immediate Past President. The event was held September 27 through 30, 2007 in Palm Springs, California. More than 1,500 Republican women leaders from across the nation attended this event to prepare and train for the 2008 elections. Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 2008 Presidential candidate, addressed the group at the general session on Saturday, September, 29th. As a side trip, Maureen and Stella visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
